Discipleship
Why Discipleship?
The Great Commission
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Job, family, friends and other duties of life all clamor for your attention and your devotion. Life-on-life missional discipleship is the most effective means of progressing toward spiritual maturity. This is the model Christ used with his disciples.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Alexander Mitserlisch once wrote,
"Society has torn the soul of the male, and into this tear insecurity, selfishness and despair. Consequently, men do not know who they are as men. Rather, they define themselves by what they do, who they know or by what they own."
Men....are you playing it safe?
"Jesus came to save the world, and to that end He died, but on His way to the cross He concentrated His life on making a few disciples. These men were taught to do the same, until through the process of reproduction, the gospel of the kingdom would reach to the ends of the earth." - Leroy Eims
God’s heart is grieved about many men today who:
- Are spiritually lost or spiritually cold.
- Are apathetic about their spiritual leadership responsibilities.
- Are confused about masculinity.
- Are abandoning their families.
- Have been captured by moral impurities.
- Have been deluded with the pursuit of worldly success.
- Have been disillusioned with false promises of wealth & power.
Andy Stanley states:
"We believe the small group is the best place for sustained life-change to occur. In a small group, people study God's Word together and are in a safe enough environment to discuss the issues and challenges of life. It's also where they pray, care for one another, and are missed if they don't show up."
The Gathering/Palm Beach agrees with Andy and we will do all we can to get men "plugged in" with other men for spirtiual-emotional and relational growth.
Steve Farrar, founder of Men’s Leadership Ministries states:
"Men want to be successful, significant, and have meaning in life. Men want to be good husbands, good fathers, and the spiritual leaders of their families. But many of them do not know how to accomplish these goals." A man learns how to lead when other men take an interest in him.
